HISTORY

BRIEF BACKGROUND INFROMATION:

Kodmo Education Fund (KEF) has a rich history that dates back many years previous to its creation. In 1998 some members of the Somali Diaspora in North America saw the need to help educate the children in rural nomadic Somalia. Some of the founders themselves where nomads as children and had full knowledge of what the future holds for those children without education. Every morning in rural nomadic Somalia tens of thousands of children who are at school age go out to rare camels, goats, sheep, and cattle. That is because the opportunity of going to school is simply not there for them. KEF was started to provide that missing opportunity. The feeling was that a socio-economic change could be triggered by providing an opportunity to educate future generations. A pilot project was lunched at Xumbays, a very remote village where livelihood is made only from rearing camels, goats, and sheep. As of today 157 children go to that school with 4 permanent salaried teachers. Since the project is so successful KEF aims to expand to other villages and add boarding schools for those children whose parents can’t afford to keep them in villages.

FUTURE PROJECTS:

Kodmo Education Fund will add dormitories to the current school in 2008 in order to enable parents that have no place to leave their children and other neighboring villages to access the school. In addition, KEF will sponsor another village in 2007 and by 2010 will have six primary schools in operation in different villages and two boarding schools one high school and one vocational school
